Abstract [eng] |
This research is providing new information about alternative teaching methods for improving oral hygiene in adolescents. The application and effectiveness of theory-based interventions for changing oral self-care behavior were revealed and discussed. All methods improved oral self-care skills and oral self-care practice in adolescents and were superior to the conventional dental instruction model. Intervention based on Self-Efficacy Theory had the greatest long lasting impact to improve oral self-care. Oral hygiene status variation was dependent on several factors such as quantity of dental plaque before intervention, socio-economic status, gender, social support, professional support, competence and motivation. In order to change adolescents’ oral self-care behavior there is the necessity of multi sessions, instructions and teaching of oral self-care skills, practical repetition of new methods and motivation promotion. |
