Abstract [eng] |
The paper is focused on analyzing the reasons for the use of Phoenician motives to construct modern identity in Lebanon in the 20th century and in evaluating this discourse, which is generally related to the Maronite community. The idea of the uniqueness of Lebanon was based on the development of the myth of an heroic past with Phoenician motives to compete with other concepts of modern identity in Lebanon. The article suggests that the use of Phoenician motives, which includes both radical and moderate reinterpretations of the past, was formed by the Maronites. Eventually elements of the moderate reinterpretation became an integral part of the modern Lebanese identity. |
