The aim of this paper is to present and to analyze the representation of Calderon's Life is a Dream by the Lithuanian director Gintaras Varnas (Lithuanian National Drama Theater, 2000). On the one hand, we approach the play from a historical perspective, since we explain its history and circumstances, the artistic report, the decisions of the director, etc.; on the other hand, we perform an analytical work examining Varnas' interpretation of Calderon's play through the analysis of the different systems of signs that participate in the representation: literary text and its translation; costumes; set design and lighting; music and sound; and actors' work. |
