Abstract [eng] |
miRNAs are non-coding small RNA molecules of 18-24 nucleotides that regulate gene translation and are involved in a wide range of processes that regulate cellular functions. Research has identified changes in miRNA expression in the pathogenesis of various diseases, including cancer. Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine malignancy and its incidence has been increasing over the last three decades. Papillary thyroid carcinoma accounts for up to 85% of all thyroid cancers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of miRNA expression in the diagnosis of papillary thyroid carcinoma and in the prediction of disease progression. It was hypothesised that the assessment of miRNA expression in fine-needle aspirates of thyroid nodules may help to differentiate benign from malignant thyroid nodules. Also, that papillary thyroid carcinoma with different pathological features has different miRNA expression, which could help predict a more aggressive course of the disease before surgery. To this end, 160 subjects with suspected thyroid carcinoma in thyroid nodule aspirates were enrolled in the study. These samples were subjected to miRNA expression testing by next-generation sequencing and RT-PCR. Biostatistical analysis of the results was performed and conclusions were drawn. |
