Abstract [eng] The properties of the electroencephalogram (EEG) gamma range (30-80 Hz) can be investigated by analyzing the auditory steady state responses (ASSRs) caused by periodic auditory stimulation. Cognitive impairment or risk of cognitive impairment is associated with changes in ASSR. However, whether ASSRs can be used as a biomarker for cognitive impairment requires detailed research into their links. To investigate this, we conducted a systematic literature review. In addition, we conducted a study in which we analyzed in detail the associations between 40 Hz ASSR and different cognitive abilities involving simple and complex information processing in a homogeneous sample of healthy subjects. As individual gamma frequency (IGF) ASSRs can more accurately reflect the properties of an individual's neural network, we also conducted a study of the correlation between cognitive abilities and IGF-ASSRs in a sample of healthy subjects. A systematic review of the literature revealed that differences in gamma-band ASSRs may reflect abilities to manage attention and temporarily store and process information. The results showed that 40 Hz ASSR is positively correlated with the average number of moves in the Tower of London task, and that 40 Hz and IGD ASSRs are positively correlated with the average move time in the Tower of London task. These results suggest that gamma-band ASSRs correlate with individual cognitive abilities and may reflect aspects of planning and working memory functioning.
