Abstract [eng] Each genre of folklore has its own intention and means of expression. The purpose of folk riddles is to encode the world, to provide each element of the world with some distinctive features facilitating its identification, while metaphor and paradox become their main instruments of artistic expression. Riddles have mainly performed—and continue to perform—the functions of game and entertainment, but their deeper meaning is related to the categorisation of the world, dividing the universe into its separate components and finding points of connection between them. The search for the mother’s attributes and their coding principles in this paper has shown that the riddles focus on the mother’s actions, functions, appearance, character traits, and her operational space, and that the coding of the mother through metaphorisation is based on a wide range of the world components: from household objects, natural and earthly objects, to the celestial elements.
