Abstract [eng] The dissertation is based on a collection of four scientific publications. The dissertation aims to develop and apply a methodological framework for optical remote sensing of the geodynamics and morphology of nearshore sandbars as a basis for the determination of dynamic features of nearshore sandbars. To achieve this aim, an original algorithm for the automated extraction of nearshore sandbars in high- to medium-resolution optical satellite images was developed and validated. The morphological characteristics of nearshore sandbars along the Baltic Sea‘s nearshore of the Curonian Spit were identified in PlanetScope and RapidEye satellite images from 2009 to 2021 using the proposed algorithm. The rates of nearshore sandbar cross-shore migration on different time scales and the duration of the net offshore migration cycle were evaluated along the nearshore of the Curonian Spit. Nearshore sandbar behaviour regions exhibiting similar dynamic and morphological characteristics were identified. The factors that determine the alongshore differences in the behaviour of nearshore sandbars in the Curonian Spit were assessed. Nearshore sandbar switching episodes were also evaluated, with the locations and types of sandbar switching identified, and the relationship between changes in nearshore morphology and coastal evolution within the sandbar switching zones assessed. The results of the dissertation provide a basis for large-scale nearshore sandbar studies at low cost and timely decision-making in coastal management.
