Abstract [eng] This doctoral thesis aims is to invasively and non-invasively examine left ventricular myocardial fibrosis in patients with severe aortic valve stenosis undergoing surgical aortic valve replacement. Novel cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging technique, T1 mapping, have been applied in the current doctoral study. Associations between myocardial fibrosis and various clinical, cardiovascular imaging and serum biomarkers have been investigated. In addition, patient’s myocardial samples were screened for the presence of cardiac amyloidosis, aiming to detect Transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis. The results of a meta-analysis investigating the prevalence and prognostic value of myocardial fibrosis in patients with aortic valve stenosis are presented.
