Abstract [eng] The article deals with cultural heritage research projects organised at Vilnius University Library (hereafter VU Library). Being a research library VU Library accounts that it has twofold function - to provide research support and organize research in the field of library and information science (hereafier LIS) and preserved cultural heritage. Many academic and research libraries are involved in LIS research. There is a need to enhance and intensify research in this field, to improve its qualit. It is stressed that research is a means of improvement of practical work; it helps to create theoretical insights in LIS, perfects critical thinking, etc. However in this field there is a lack of proper organisational and institutional support. Apart from research in LIS, libraries, that have extensive cultural heritage collections, are involved in their research. However this field of library activity is being presented in a fragmentary way. Usually it is limited to information about specific collections, description of documents, conservation, digitization or digitization projects, promotion using new techniques. As a rule these activities are not being referred to as the research activities, as there are no departments responsible for them. In order to fill in this gap the article describes attempts to institutionalize cultural heritage research in VU Library and analyses 3 research projects execured in 2012-2015 - DigiCOURT, VIRTUS and COST (Reassembling the Republic of Letters, 1580-1800).
