Abstract [eng] The doctoral dissertation titled “They were all patriots anyway, they wanted independence”: memory work and understanding of the previous regime in the generation after the transformative turning point” deals with the generation after and the memory work it employs to make sense of family members’ lives and experiences under the preceding regime. The interdisciplinary dissertation aims at building a theory of how the ‘memory’ of the previous regime, structurally presented as an occupation, is formed. It refers to two fundamental identification objects. First, the family, a primary place of mnemonic socialisation and secondly the state, a large collectivity that narrates its past through collective memory media. Through interpretative analysis, the dissertation outlines the memory work strategies employed by the generation after which deal with the meanings given to the recent past at communicative and collective memory levels. 5 memory work strategies (exaggeration/reinforcement, balancing the different meanings, justification, understanding and new meaning attribution) illustrate the principles that regulate and form their understanding (‘memory’) of the previous regime.
