Abstract [eng] In humans, oxidation is a part of the cycle of life; however oxidative stress has been associated with the development of more than one hundred deferent chronic diseases including cardiovascular diseases. Excessive free radical production, especially reactive oxygen species, from different exogenous and endogenous sources can interact with cell biomolecules and cause their damage. On the other hand human body is able to neutralize the harmful effects of the above-mentioned derivatives with the help of antioxidants - protective agents that inactivate reactive oxygen ions and other types of free radicals. Carotenoids - natural pigments synthesized by plants and microorganisms - in the human body they are one of the most important exogenous lipophilic antioxidants. Biological action of carotenoids is not limited to antioxidant activity. These compounds are well known for their provitamin A activity, anti-inflammatory action, furthermore they can affect gap junction communication and xsenobiotic metabolism. However studies to prove biological activity of carotenoids usually are performed in vitro and using animal models. Therefore our understanding about the metabolism of these compounds and their biological effects on human body is limited. The goal of this study was to evaluate mean serum carotenoid concentrations in the Lithuanian population and their association with cardiovascular morbidity and biochemical blood risk factors of CVD and to reveal the most important predictors of variation of serum carotenoid concentrations.
