Abstract [eng] The field of personality disorders has evolved over the last decade and two diagnostic models of personality disorder – categorical and dimensional – are described in international classifications. In the international context, there is an ongoing scientific debate about the integration of research data based on the categorical approach into the new dimensional model and the links between these constructs. This thesis reviews and juxtaposes aspects of both approaches by analysing data on categorical borderline personality disorder and level of personality functioning as a dimensional measure of personality disorder severity. The doctoral dissertation aimed to explore the characteristics of adolescents at risk for personality disorder and to identify risk factors for personality pathology in adolescence. The thesis is based on four international scientific publications analysing the results of research carried out at the Developmental Psychopathology Research Centre, Institute of Psychology, Vilnius University, between 2018 and 2022. The dissertation proposes that adolescence is the period when personality disorders emerge and can be validly assessed, and the negative consequences of the disorder can already be observed. Based on previous empirical research and the conceptual questions raised by the researchers, the thesis explores the factors associated with the risk for personality disorder in adolescence. The thesis discusses the integration of the empirical results in the theoretical context of the concept of personality disorder and considers their relevance in clinical practice.
