Abstract [eng] |
This Master’s thesis analyses Ukraine’s gas transit securitization process and its dynamics in political communication to the public. The link between the 2014 war and Ukraine's ambition to reduce its dependence on Russian gas supplies created a dilemma as Ukraine sought to maintain gas transit from Russia to the EU. To explain the reasons for securitizing gas transit, the securitization and energy security theories have been combined and formed an interpretive framework. This approach detailed an analysis of the speech acts made by Ukraine’s government officials and Naftogaz representatives. The research covers the 2014 – 2021 period of the gas transit securitization process, and the two hypotheses have been risen to access the dynamics of securitizing actors’ rhetorics convincing the audience. The results of the in-depth political debate provide an understanding of how the Ukrainian audience was persuaded of the need to reduce gas imports from Russia on the one hand but maintain gas transit on the other. |
