Abstract [eng] The aim of the dissertation is to classify closed and still operating municipal waste landfills in Lithuania and to assess the patterns in the change of the chemical composition of the groundwater in typical landfills located in different hydrogeological systems in Lithuania as pollutants get filtered in the municipal waste landfills. A total of 923 landfills were classified according to hydrogeological systems in which they are located, the volume of waste, and the hydrochemical characteristics of the most intensive groundwater pollution zones. The classification was performed by using the active groundwater circulation zone vulnerability map and the hierarchical cluster analysis. The patterns in the change of the chemical composition of groundwater were assessed using the PHREEQC thermodynamic simulation programme for three typical landfills. The typification of landfills facilitates the choice of landfills with similar volumes of waste and similar hydrochemical characteristics of the most intensive groundwater pollution zones in each identified hydrogeological system. During the research, the physical-chemical processes were revealed that cause changes in the chemical composition of groundwater as pollutants get filtered; and that groundwater tends to dissolve or precipitate individual minerals in different hydrogeological systems and pollution zones. The data can be used in forecasting pollution dispersion in the groundwater of the landfills installed in similar hydrogeological systems.
