Abstract [eng] In the recent decades there have been a number of contrastive corpus-based studies on modality, which displays a variety of realizations and meanings and is an important aspect of cross-linguistic and cross-cultural communication. However, there has been no contrastive corpus-based study dealing with modal encoding in French and Lithuanian. The current research focuses on the modal verbs devoir ‘must’ and falloir ‘need’, their meanings and functions in French fiction and their translation correspondences in Lithuanian. By applying corpus-based methodology, the study aims to explore the meanings and functions of the French verbs devoir ‘must’ and falloir ‘need’ from a synchronic perspective, to examine the quantitative and qualitative parameters of their realizations in French fiction and to investigate their translation correspondences in Lithuanian. The study is synchronic and employs analytical descriptive and corpus-based methods. To analyze the verbs devoir ‘must’ and falloir ‘need’, a parallel bidirectional corpus (CTLFR-LT-FR) was designed. Its size is 2 642 158 words.
