The dissertation aims to investigate the reception of the works of R. M. Rilke in the Lithuanian literature. It is intended to overview all relevant periods of this literary phenomenon such as Interwar, the Soviet Occupation, and the decades of the regained Independence. It also pays attention to the other important aspects, e.g. characteristics of the readers, the horizons of expectations, the process of reading, repertoire, significance of the definition “Rilkean” etc. Besides, it investigates how the reception manifests itself in the texts of Lithuanian poets, namely, Henrikas Nagys (1920–1996), Jonas Juškaitis (1933–2019) and Aidas Marčėnas (born in 1960). The theoretical and methodological background was formed on the broad attitude of the literary hermeneutics: the theoretical concepts of the aesthetics of reception as developed by Hans Robert Jauss (de. Rezeptionsästhetik) and the theory of the act of reading by Wolfgang Iser. This thesis also offers more detailed insight into some less popular aspects of the reception of Rilke, including direct and indirect relationship with the Rilkean thematic area, motifs and images. Another feature of this work is an attempt to question the hyperbolization of the myth/ cult of Rilke. In Interwar Lithuania, the texts of Rilke served as an authority and example of the modernist literature and acted as the guiding light for the Lithuanian authors and readers. Throughout the entire Soviet period, the reception of Rilke to a bigger or lesser extent was related with the system of the official ideological justification and various strategies of “maneuvering”. During this period (after 1990), no more major shifts in the reception of Rilke have been observed. The dynamism of “tides and ebbs” could be observed, when attention was directed to the translation of the texts of the Rilke. An exceptional feature of the reception of the works of Rilke in the Lithuanian literature is its universality. |
