Abstract [eng] The bilingual dictionary, as an instrument for learning an L2 with the help of the L1, establishes links between the source language (SL) words and their target language (TL) equivalents, but also links between the SL examples and their translation in TL, so that the equivalence covers both the equivalent and the translation of the example. In principle, the latter includes the equivalent, but quality bilingual lexicography increasingly provides examples whose translation presents other, unmentioned equivalents, or even a syntactic structure different from that of the SL example. This diversity of examples, which gives prestige to the often criticised bilingual dictionaries, shows on the one hand the systematicity and predictability of the language being learnt, but on the other hand reflects the fact that the two paired languages are not parallel systems, literally translatable, but that each language is a peculiar system of expression. The supplementary information added by the examples may be less generalisable and practical than examples illustrating explicit information in the entry, but they have an important pedagogical value, because they prevent the user from the natural tendency to think that the equivalent always allows literal translation. These ideas are illustrated with examples from dictionaries of English and Spanish and (by contrast) Lithuanian and Spanish pairs.
