Abstract [eng] In order to implement provisions of national, EU and WHO documents as well as improve public nutrition and health, nutritional research of population must be done. There is no doubt, that inappropriate nutrition can course many chronic diseases. The aim of research – to evaluate nutrition habits and their tendency of variation of 18-65 years old Lithuanian population. Tasks of research: 1. To examine and evaluate nutrition habits of Lithuanian population. 2. To determine tendency of variation of nutrition habits of Lithuanian population. 3. To evaluate body mass index of population and its tendency of variation. Methods of research: 3500 Lithuania adults were selected to participate in this research. The rate of research reply is 69,1 percent. During the research, each respondent was asked about nutrition and lifestyle peculiarities, certain nutrition aspects as well as how do they evaluate the state of factual nutrition. Body mass index was calculated of all respondents. Results: It was determined that Lithuanian population do not consuming enough fresh vegetables: less than hall of respondents answered, that they eat fresh vegetables 3-5 times per week, and about the third of respondents indicated, that eat fresh vegetables 1-2 times per week. The main criterion of food choice for women are price, and for men – taste. However, since 1997, increased the amount of population which choose food products according to the prophylaxis of diseases – in 1997 for 8,3 percent of population the main criteria for choice of food was prophylaxis of diseases, and in 2007 – 17,7 percent. Also, the use of vegetable oil is increasing. 76,2 percent of population using vegetable oil for food making, and animal fat more often is used by village residents. However, since 1997, the consumption of animal fat decreased from 28,9 percent till 2,1 percent Lithuanian population consumes little amount of cereal products, fish and its products: only 12,4 percent of respondents eat cereal products several times per day, only 8,3 percent of population eat fish and fish products 3-5 times per week, and 10,4 percent of population do not eat fish at all. Usually, milk and milk products are more popular among village residents and women. It is identified that huge amount of population (59,2 percent) additionally salting already made dishes. Though since 1997, the number of persons which were additionally salted already made dishes decreased, however, the number of persons, which is almost always salted food without tasting remains unchanged (7 percent). Big part of population are obese: lager part of obese people (BMI ≥ 30,1) consists from women, as well as older than 51 years old and having lower education respondents. Matching the data of this research with early accomplished, surprising decrease of BMI tendency could be noticed: in 2002, it was 16 percent of persons’ who had BMI ≥ 30,1, in 2007 – 12 percent. Nutrition habits of Lithuania population is changing, however, it is still not meeting the recommendation of healthy nutrition.
