Abstract [eng] The dissertation is based on four published scientific articles and three manuscripts. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of dry mouth conditions, their association with salivary alpha-amylase encoding gene copy number variation, and behavioral and stress factors in individuals with dry mouth. The first paper examines the epidemiology of dry mouth conditions and assesses the potential role of the dentist in suspecting cases of Sjögren's syndrome. The following articles and manuscripts compare the clinical features of dry mouth and the behavioral and stress factors associated with it. The last article and manuscript examined the relationship between the copy number of the gene encoding salivary alpha-amylase, dry mouth conditions and their clinical manifestations.
