Abstract [eng] One way to develop people’s participation in making decisions on how to improve their environment is by covering environmental topics in the Media. Therefore, the objective of this final thesis is to research how environmental information makes the impact on our society. The subject of research is: environmental information in daily Lithuanian newspapers “Lietuvos rytas”, “Kauno diena”, Verslo žinios”, weekly magazines “Veidas”, “Ekstra” and “Žaliasis pasaulis” and the daily newspaper “Komjaunimo tiesa” published in Lithuania on 1988. In adittion, information from TV broadcasting “Pradėk nuo savęs”, and radio programme “Vienkartinė planeta”. Information sources has been investigated in weekly magazines “Veidas” and “Ekstra” and both TV and radio programmes will be used. Moreover, there was a poll made by the society and editors of subjects, mentioned above. The hypophesis of the thesis is: Environmental information in Lithuanian Media should be placed professionally and how to reach its taget audiences, information sources for this kind of information shoud be used professionally, placed according to environmental counsciousness people and to make impact to their environmentally friendly decisions, also to increase Civic participation. Main tasks set in the thesis: 1. Make a content analysis of environmental information from periodical publications, TV and radio programs and evalute the level of environmental counscionsness within these. 2. Evaluate what kind and what amount of environmental sources journalists use to cover environmental topics. 3. Research Civic counsciuosnness of editors and authors from periodical publications, as well as from the Lithuanian society. Methods used for research: content analysis, quantitative calculation and comparison of environmental information sources, the analysis of records and poll’s. Results and findings: according to the research there should be more attention paid to environmental topics in the Lithuanian Media. People do understand that protecting our environment is very important, but have little or no motivation to increase this interest, due its inaccessibility and inefficiency. Scientific and practical value of this thesis: It will be useful for journalists who are covering environmental topics and communication for sustainable development lecturers and those who are working in the field of environmental communication.
