Abstract [eng] The object of this thesis is drug addiction as dependence disease, it‘s prevention in Lithuania and role of mass media in providing information about drug addiction and also it’s prevention in Lithuania. People taking narcotic substance belong to marginal group and hold marginal place in society. Drug abuse is deviant act having results not only to person taking narcotic substance but also to society – relatives suffer because of person’s dependence, drug addicts commit crimes. They are invalid, can not work as any other member of society, therefore state supports them and give money for their treatment. Therefore prevention of drug addiction is really important. There are many prevention programs going on in Lithuania designed for formation of society’s healthy lifestyle habits, also there are programs for members of risk groups and for treatment, rehabilitation of drug addicts and their reintegration to society. There was research of best Lithuanian daily newspapers (“Lietuvos rytas” and “Respublika”) conducted in year of 2005 – 2006. The object of this research was to evaluate in quantitative way “Lietuvos rytas” and “Respublika” interest in various problems related with drugs, drug addiction and it’s prevention. Also to analyze how best Lithuanian daily newspapers inform their readers about drug addiction and it’s prevention. It was established that interest to drug addiction and its prevention is declining; there are less publications about this theme though drug addition’s extent is not diminishing. The most popular theme in best Lithuanian daily newspapers was criminal acts, related to disposal of narcotic, psychotropic, poisonous or strongly operating substance. There are articles writing about all kinds of prevention but most of interest goes to rehabilitation, which is part of prevention and it’s not so effective as primary or secondary prevention.
