THE ROLE OF NURSES IN ORGANIZING THE MEDICAL CARE FOR SOCIALLY-EXCLUDED PEOPLE Violeta Bičkauskienė Keywords: a nurse, nursing, health care, social separation. Effective and duly organized health care of socially supportable persons is one of the factors that may mitigate social separation. The role of a nurse in this sphere is very important, however, it is insufficiently explored. The investigation was carried out seeking to identify the role of a nurse in organizing health care of persons upon social separation. The needs of persons upon social separation in health care and nursing services were explored, it was cleared up whether such needs differ dependently on the most frequently visited institution engaged in provision of social services, the need in an assistance of a nurse at kip houses and Caritas centers was examined and a conformity of the nursing services provided at Vilnius kip houses to the needs of the clients was verified. The investigation was carried out in the years 2004-2006 at Vilnius municipal kip houses and at a Parish Caritas centers branch hereof. The data were collected by questioning three groups of respondents: persons residing at Vilnius municipal kip house and Vilnius Archbishopric kip house as well as persons frequenting Vilnius Caritas centers; persons employed at these institutions; the nurses engaged at Vilnius municipal kip house. An anonymic standardized questionnaire was chosen as the principal method of the investigation. The questionnaire for nurses was formed in course of interviewing the nurse according to the method of non-standardized deep interviewing. The interviewing was carried out in the years 2004-2006. Statistical data processing was carried out using SPSS software version 8.0; a statistical reliability of the data was assessed. The completed investigation disclosed that the needs of persons upon social separation in nursing most frequently are related to cardiovascular, cold and viral diseases. Many clients of kip houses and Caritas organizations are ill with dependencies and mental diseases. In the opinion of persons upon social separation, an assistance of a nurse at an institution engaged in provision of social services is necessary. Over a half of the examined, should often address themselves to a nurse in cases of health problems. A nurse should pay a particular attention to health training of clients of institutions engaged in provision of social services, because their knowledge on health preservation, infectious and other diseases is not sufficient. Nursing services provides at Vilnius kip house conform to the needs of the examined clients. It is predetermined by selfless work of nurses and their empathy in respect of the health problems of their clients. |
