Abstract [eng] Relevance of the problem and aim of the study: Fixed orthodontic appliances create additional surfaces for dental plaque accumulation, which increases the risk of caries and periodontal disease. The aim of this study was to determine the amount of plaque and bleeding on probing in patients treated with brackets at the Vilnius University Hospital Zalgiris Clinic, depending on the type of archwire fixation. Material and methods: The study included 69 patients with fixed appliances, divided into 3 groups. Group 1 – brackets with metal ligatures, group 2 – self-ligating brackets and group 3 – brackets with elastomeric ligatures. Löe and Silness Gingival Index (GI) and the amount of plaque based on Orthodontic Plaque Index (OPI) were evaluated in patients. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS statistical software package. One-way ANOVA was used to determine statistical significance. Results were considered significant if p < 0.05. Results: Group 1 had the lowest average scores for both OPI and GI. OPI was 3.25, SD = ± 0.57, and GI was 1.01, SD = ± 0.20. Group 2 had an average OPI score of 3.35, SD = ± 0.47, and an average GI score of 1.06, SD = ± 0.16. Group 3 had the highest average scores for both OPI and GI. OPI was 3.47, SD = ± 0.39, and GI was 1.09, SD = ± 0.24. However, there were no statistically significant differences in the amount of plaque and bleeding on probing among the groups after statistical analysis. The amount of plaque was lowest during the second measurement, compared to other measurements. The differences between measurements were not statistically significant (p < 0,05). Conclusions: Although values of OPI and GI differed between groups, the differences between all study groups were not statistically significant.
