Abstract [eng] Over-the-counter analgesics are used all over the world and are probably the most common self-treatment for headaches. This is a very widespread phenomenon and should therefore be sought to be better understood. The purpose of this study is to determine which factors predict OTC pain medication use and self-medication behavior for acute headache. The sample consisted of 137 people, 90% of them were women, the average age was 28 years. The research used: questions about experienced pain, pain interference, methods of pain relief, Self-Medicating Scale, The Coping Strategies Questionnaire, The Beliefs About Medicines Questionnaire and Pain Beliefs Questionnaire. Group comparisons, correlational studies, binomial logistic regression analysis and multinomial linear regression analysis were performed. Relief of acute headache with OTC analgesics was found to be predicted by pain interference and coping self-statements. Reluctance to use analgesics until the pain is severe enough was only associated with the frequency of severe headache. A rapid decision to use analgesics is predicted by frequency of severe headache, coping self-statements and catastrophizing. Anticipation of spontaneous change is predicted by pain interference, coping self-statements, and ignoring pain sensations.
