Abstract [eng] |
The breastfeeding is important because of its benefits to child and mother and regarding increasing rates of postpartum depression it is relevant to study its interconnection and relations to mother’s self-efficacy and self-esteem. Previous research have demonstrated relations among these constructs separately, however, the results are ambiguous and were not widely analysed in the mutual context. Therefore, the aim of this study is to analyse relations among breastfeeding, postpartum depressivity, maternal self-efficacy and self-esteem. The data collected from 403 women in longitudinal study managed by prof. dr. R. Jusienė in 2009 – 2014. The results showed negative relations between mother’s early depression after birth and duration of breastfeeding, also differences of depressivity regarding breastfeeding practices, positive relations between maternal self-esteem and self-efficacy and its relations to mother’s depressivity. The importance of self-esteem and previous postpartum depression symptoms demonstrated in prognosing mother’s depressivity 0, 3, 6 and 36 months after delivery. The results may be helpful in reducing the rates of postpartum depressivity and increasing breastfeeding rates. |
