Abstract [eng] |
Purpose. To evaluate the influence of pulmonary vein isolation on quality of life in patients with atrial fibrillation by performing systematic literature review and meta-analysis. Methods. Literature search was conducted using PubMed, Cochrane Library and Clinical Trials.gov databases. Randomized controlled trials investigating quality of life after pulmonary vein isolation in patients with atrial fibrillation were included in the systematic review based on predefined eligibility criteria. Meta-analysis was performed to evaluate differences between pulmonary vein isolation and pharmacologic therapy effect on quality of life. Results. A total of 14 randomized controlled trials involving 4878 participants with atrial fibrillation were included in the review. The total duration of follow-up visits ranged from 6 to 60 months. Thirteen trials showed a significant improvement in quality of life after pulmonary vein isolation. In two studies improved quality of life was maintained up to 5 years. A meta-analysis of eight trials showed that quality of life after pulmonary vein isolation was better compared to drug therapy. In addition, pulmonary vein isolation resulted in a greater improvement in physical health-related quality of life (p<0.00001). Conclusions. The results of this systematic review suggest that pulmonary vein isolation significantly improves quality of life when used as a first- or second-line treatment in patients with paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation. |
