The experience of relatives of people with mental illness. Author: Kostas Imbrasas. Vilnius. Vilnius University. 2023. 67 pages. Relatives of individuals with mental disorders face significant difficulties that can affect their well-being and contribute to mental health problems. The difficulties experienced by relatives of individuals with mental disorders vary in different countries, and the Lithuanian context is unfavorable for both individuals with mental disorders and their relatives. Research on this group of individuals would help draw attention to their difficulties and assist professionals working with them. This study aims to investigate the experience of relatives of individuals with mental disorders. The study involved 10 participants (9 females and 1 male) who had relatives with mental disorders. They were selected through convenient sampling via the social network "Facebook" and the author's social circle. The participants were interviewed using a semi- structured interview, and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The experience of the study participants is the result of complex mutual interactions between the relatives with mental disorders, the participants, and the environmental context, and it is characterized by ambivalence in various areas. There was no mention of psychotherapeutic treatment for the relatives with mental disorders in this study. |
