Abstract [eng] Peculiarities of anxiety in patients undergoing surgical operations, Viktorija Jurgilė, Vilnius, Vilniaus university, 2023, 53 p. Scientific literature investigating preoperative anxiety acknowledges that patients experience anxiety. However, most of them have conducted quantitative studies, and there is still a lack of deeper understanding of anxiety during the perioperative period. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine the specific manifestations of anxiety experienced by patients in the perioperative period, as well as to evaluate the influence of patient information about the surgery on the experienced anxiety. Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were chosen for this study. In the quantitative study, 42 participants took part. The age of the study participants ranged from 19 to 84 years (M = 57.52, SD = 16.90), with 25 females (59.5%) and an average age of 55.24, and 17 males (40.5%) with an average age of 60.88. The instruments used were the Personality Traits Questionnaire (BFI-2) and Beck's Anxiety Inventory. In the qualitative study, 6 participants took part: 5 females and 1 male. Data for the study were collected through semi-structured interviews, and thematic analysis was used for data analysis. It was determined that the highest level of anxiety was experienced before the actual surgery, with females and older patients exhibiting higher levels of anxiety. No significant impact of additional information about the surgery and anesthesia on changes in anxiety levels was identified. The results of the qualitative study revealed different manifestations of anxiety during three periods: preoperative, during the hospital stay, and postoperative periods. Keywords: perioperative period, preoperative anxiety, expression of anxiety, surgical operations, patients.
