STUDY ON THE PERCEPTION TO THE NEED OF PERMANENT TEETH EXTRACTION AND RETAINER WEAR AFTER ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT AS A PLAN OF OVERALL TREATMENT OF THE PATIENTS COMING FOR ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT SUMMARY The relevance of the problem and the aim of the work. Tooth extraction is an invasive, fear-inducing procedure and teeth retention is a lifelong responsibility. During the initial orthodontic treatment consultation, communication and mutual understanding between the orthodontist and the patient is extremely important. The aim of the work: to evaluate the attitude of patients applying for orthodontic treatment towards teeth extraction and wearing a retainer throughout their life as part of the orthodontic treatment plan. Materials and methods. The data was collected by means of a questionnaire through the social network Facebook, in paper format at the VULŽK and private dental clinics in Vilnius. 267 respondents were surveyed. The statistical data package IBM Statistics SPSS 29 was used. Descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation, Chi-squared independence test, Fisher's exact test, Kruskal Wallis, Mann Whitney and post hoc statistical tests were used for the statistical analysis, when the level of statistical significance is p ≤ 0.05. Results. During the initial orthodontic consultation, wisdom teeth removal is recommended to 9/10 respondents. 2/10 of those interviewed were recommended to remove non- wisdom teeth. 2/10 patients would seek another specialist's opinion after including the removal of wisdom teeth in the treatment plan and 7.5/10 - removal of non-wisdom teeth. 7/10 respondents knew that lifelong retention is required after orthodontic treatment. 5/10 respondents do not follow the retentive mode of wearing the device. 4/10 respondents said that the information about retention during the initial consultation is insufficient. Conclusions. Younger patients perception on the inclusion of permanent teeth extraction in the treatment plan is less favorable than older patients. Especially the removal of other (non-wisdom) teeth raises many doubts. But older patients treated with braces as well as aligners wear retentive appliances more responsibly compared to younger patients. Key words: orthodontic treatment, extraction, wisdom teeth, non-wisdom teeth, retention, retainer, retentive appliance. |
