This work includes a literature analysis of synthesis methods for arylpropionic, arylacrylic, and arylpropiolic acids containing an ortho-hydroxy group. Based on the literature analysis, an investigation of reaction conditions for intermediate carboxylic acids was conducted. This work also covers and analyses the direct condensation of benzimidazoles with carbaldehydes. In a multi-step reaction pathway based on the Wittig reaction, the target compound 4-(2-(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl)ethyl)-6-isopropylbenzene-1,3-diol (16) was isolated in a low-yield. This work also reviews isolated side products caused by unprotected hydroxy groups. |
