This thesis examines the case of the identity of Soviet architecture in Vilnius Old Town. This work aims to analyse what social meanings create the identity of Soviet architecture in Vilnius Old Town. The emerging conflict of discourses between Vilnius Old Town and the residential districts shapes the main research question - how is the Soviet-era architecture of Vilnius Old Town (1940-1990) perceived? The thesis aims to analyse what social meanings create the identity of Soviet architecture in the Old Town of Vilnius. "The Identity of Soviet-era Architecture: the Case of Vilnius Old Town (1940-1990)" thesis consists of four main parts. The first part of the thesis presents the theoretical background and the concept of architecture. The second part of the thesis presents the methodology, explaining the choice of the methodology and the justification for it. The third part of the thesis presents the data from the qualitative interviews and the results of the research, which will be used as a basis for the conclusions. The fourth part of the thesis consists of conclusions. The thesis conducts a qualitative study using a semi-structured interview method to determine how Soviet-era architecture is perceived and what social meanings are attributed to Soviet-era architecture in the Old Town. |
