Abstract [eng] Aim and tasks: To collect and discuss scientific literature describing peculiarities of sleep in childhood, sleep phases and sleep duration. To examine scientific articles describing connection between sleep quality of children and mental health. To discuss how sleep quality in children influences the mental health of their parents. To review and collect main sleep schedule and sleep hygiene recommendations for both children and their parents that are distinguished in scientific articles. Methods: A review of literature was performed using the PubMed search engine in the electronic MEDLINE database. Literature that was written in the english language, had a free access to full text, met the topic of literature review, was selected. Keywords, such as „sleep“, „children“, „mental health“, „parents“, „family“ and their combinations, were used. Results: 49 scientific articles, that meet the topic and tasks, were included. Articles, that met different subtopics of the literature review, were selected. These articles discussed sleep peculiarities, connection between sleep and mental health, the connection between the quality of sleep in children and mental health of their parents and the importance of sleep schedule and sleep hygiene. Conclusions: During this scientific literature review it was found that children‘s sleep structure and sleep duration differ from sleep in adulthood. It was also found that the connection between sleep and mental health is bilateral – sleep problems can increase the risk of the development of mental health problems and poor mental health influences the rise of sleep problems. It was found that sleep problems in children can have a negative influence in parent‘s mental health. It was found that sleep hygiene and sleep schedule are important factors in ensuring good mental health of family and children.
