Abstract [eng] The number of caesarean sections in the world is constantly growing, averaging around 20-40% of all births in various prosperous countries, in Europe it is between 15% and 40%. Since caesarean section was introduced to practise, the mortality and morbidity rates of newborns and mothers in the world has begun to decline, as caesarean section helped woman whose complicated condition would not let them give birth vaginally. However, caesarean section also has risks, mainly related to the following pregnancy. One of the most common indications for a caesarean section is a scar in the uterus. However, such women may choose the try of labour after caesarean delivery. 60-80% of women can have a successful vaginal birth after caesarean, and this has many benefits for physical and psychological health. The biggest risk of vaginal birth after caesarean is uterine rupture, but it only occurs in up to 1% of women. To reduce the number of caesarean sections it is necessary to focus on this group of pregnant women and increase the number of vaginal births after caesarean. This requires a range of measures such as doctor training, auditing, educating pregnant woman, mid-wife and obstetrician working together in prenatal care, but most importantly, coherent and comprehensive counselling of pregnant woman and a unified approach to the vaginal birth after caesarean delivery.
