This paper examines the modality of necessity and its means of expression in parallel German and Lithuanian texts in European climate change law. The problem of the study is that modality, in particular the modality of necessity, has not yet been explored in this area, which has only recently become very topical: climate change. The study selected four European Commission Communications on climate change in Lithuanian and German, published on EUR-Lex between 2018 and 2020. As these legal documents are forward-looking and describe what measures will be taken in the coming years, the language of such texts is characterised by a strong modality, and in particular by necessity. By analysing the modality of necessity in selected parallel texts in German and Lithuanian and comparing their means of expression, it is possible to gain a better understanding of the modality of necessity in European climate change documents and to compare the strength of the modality in parallel German and Lithuanian texts. This work is relevant because climate protection, ecology and climate change are increasingly being discussed and new legislation on the subject is being adopted. Such work and analysis contributes to a better understanding of the content of such documents. The aim of this paper is to analyse the modality of necessity in parallel texts of European climate protection law in Lithuanian and German and to compare the expression of necessity in both languages. A comparative analysis and a descriptive method are used. |
