This thesis investigates the functional equivalence of zoomorphic idioms in Spanish and Lithuanian. The object of this work is zoomorphic idioms of Spanish and Lithuanian in domestic animals. The work aims to find out which zoononyms are productive in Spanish and which in Lithuanian phraseology, what human features are described by zoomorphic idioms of the studied languages, and whether functional equivalent zoomorphic compounds can be found and also their type. It is also intended to answer the question of how the translation should be presented when the idiom of the zoomorphic component of domestic animals has no equivalent in another language. The research data consists of 212 zoomorphic phraseologisms: 80 in Spanish and 132 in Lithuanian. The method of qualitative research is used in the work. The detailed study of the zoomorphic idioms in the studied languages reveals the existing difference between the meanings of the idioms. The zoomorphic idioms which have the same etymology reveal a possible functional equivalence. Some of the studied items despite their similar meaning cannot be used in the same context due to their pragmatic or syntactic features. The domestic animals' zoonyms are close-related to the areal culture, thus most of the analyzed idioms do not have a zoomorphic equivalent. |
