This MA thesis examines Hadrian’s biography from the Historia Augusta collection. It presents an overview of the problems typically associated with the HA and the writer’s style. This thesis analyzes how the HA author constructs Hadrian’s image as an emperor. It approaches the HA not only as a historical, but also as a literary text. The two main categories of the emperor’s image are defined: Hadrian’s reputation and Hadrian’s traits; the thesis discusses what specific traits does the author emphasize and how they form a unified image of the emperor. It is stated that Hadrian’s variability of character is emphasized as his principal quality of character. It is also said that the author uses Hadrian’s figure as a way to represent the political landscape of the principate in the 1–2 c. AD. The thesis also contains the first Lithuanian translation of the text of Hadrian’s biography from the HA. |
