Abstract [eng] In recent decades, scientists from various fields have become more interested in the space of the swamp. Meanwhile, this space has not received special attention in the discourse of Lithuanian folklore sciences. One of the possible reasons for this: the swamp is rarely mentioned in folk songs or fairy tales. Much more often, swamp space appears in legends and curses. Although there are scientific papers investigating individual plots or images of local legends, so far there are no studies which object is the space of the swamp. The purpose of this paper is to fill this niche. The object of the master 's thesis is - the swamp space in Lithuanian local legends. The aim of this work is to reveal how the swamp is depicted in local legends and what kind of relationship of Lithuanians with the swamp space is reflected in them. As local legends are a genre that maintains a strong bond with reality, after analysis it is found what place the swamp could have occupied in the traditional Lithuanian worldview. By using the semiotic tools hypothesis that the swamp was perceived as an intermediate space enabling the transition from one area to another – is proven. The spatial properties of swamps that prove this are presented in the analysis of local legends.
