Abstract [eng] Aim. To review the latest scientific publications on cervical cancer, focusing on innovative diagnostic, treatment and prognostic technologies, updated staging and screening strategies and other general aspects of the disease such as ethiology, pathogenesis, symptoms. Materials and Methods. Use of national medical information retrieval databases and journals PubMed, ScienceDirect, The Lancet, Wiley Online Library, Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, and American Society of Clinical Oncology Publications to search for English-language articles using keywords relevant to the topic cervical cancer. Publications were filtered by date, selecting the years 2018-2022, and only full-text entries were included. Results. With the discovery of the main infectious agent, the high-risk human papillomavirus, the elucidation of the key stages of the disease and the introduction of truly effective primary and secondary prevention programmes, cervical cancer is now a preventable malignancy in the world today. Despite advances in diagnosis and treatment, the long-term prognosis for cervical cancer remains poor due to metastasis and recurrence, especially in low- and middle-income countries where health services and education are less well developed. Conclusions. Human papillomavirus and cervical cancer are a pressing problem worldwide. Delays in diagnosis and treatment are likely to lead to more deaths. Further research and new state-of-the-art solutions for detection, treatment and progression of cancer are essential to improve survival rates. Keywords. Cervical cancer; cervix; oncology; diagnosis; treatment; prevention; human papillomavirus.
