Abstract [eng] Community acquired pneumonia is an infectious disease, which affects the parenchyma, and it occurs for a patient, which has not been in a hospital setting recently. The most common pathogen is Streptococcus pneumoniae. Based on the Lithuanian national treatment guidelines for community acquired pneumonia – amoxicillin is the most prescribed treatment option, because most pathogens are susceptible to β-lactam group antibiotics. There are no globally accepted criteria for evaluating the efficacy of treatment. Monitoring the progression of clinical symptoms, pneumonia and its complications, along with comorbidities, remains the most important aspects. Clinical stability ensures a successful treatment course. During treatment, reaching clinical stability demonstrates treatment efficacy. Additionally, if needed, blood markers are used for the evaluation of possible complications. Chest X-ray remains the most prominent tool for the assessment of the disease, however, clinical symptoms improvement is noticed first. Chest ultrasound is on the rise, because it can easily detect early potential complications and assess the progression of community acquired pneumonia.
