Abstract [eng] One way to approach an advanced carotid artery stenosis is to perform a carotid artery stenting. Like in percutaneous coronary intervention and stenting, patients after carotid artery stenting requires antiplatelet treatment in order to avoid thromboembolic complications and stent thrombosis. The objective of this literature review was to find studies that focus on regime, duration, effectiveness and safety of antiplatelet therapy for patients after carotid artery stenting. 6 publications were found using PubMed database that matched keywords. Results suggest that dual antiplatelet therapy is superior to monotherapy. None of the studies point out specific duration for dual antiplatelet therapy: results show that prolonged use of this therapy may reduce thromboembolic complications rate, whereas it also increase risk for bleeding. The limited number of studies also do not allow to determine, which combination of antiaggregants is the most effective and safe to use for patients after carotid artery stent implantation. Overall, European Society of Cardiology guidelines, that recommends the use of aspirin and clopidogrel for at least one month after carotid artery stenting, should be applied in today’s clinical practice.
