Abstract [eng] Summary of the work: Representation of Military Conflicts in Lithuanian Internet Media (North Caucasus, 1996-2008). Mindaugas Savickas The subject of this scientific research work is Lithuania’s internet media. The objective is to analyze the features of Lithuanian Internet media coverage of the North Caucasus conflicts (1996–2008). Also to estimate which journalistic principles – peace oriented or violence oriented – this media coverage of conflicts involves. The main goals of the research are: while using the scientific literature of the topics involved, to analyze the background in which the representation of military conflicts is made and to look at the tendencies and trends of war journalism, as well as the features of internet media; to discuss the properties of the conflicts in the North Caucasus region in regard to principles of international law and to characterize the links between them; to explore empirically the tendencies of the military conflict representation in Lithuania’s internet media considering the material given in the first part of this research work. Keeping in mind theoretical attitudes altogether, the data from the research (the method of qualitative content analysis with elements of comparative analysis) and the results that came from the analysis, a conclusion can be drawn, that the North Caucasus conflicts discourse delivered by Lithuania’s Internet media is full of misleading portrayals and lacks novel and creative decisions and suggestions for peaceful solution to conflict. All of these features show, that the violence oriented journalism type dominates in Lithuania’s Internet media. This research could be useful for scientists and academics, examining the connections between mass media and military conflicts, as well as informational wars. It also could be useful for students studying journalism and political science, officials of public offices who follow the actions and tendencies of the mass media work, as well as social institutions, who perform the mass media observation. It is the first time that the aforementioned directions of war journalism, peace, or violence oriented, and to which the content of Lithuania’s Internet media could be attributed, are being analyzed in Lithuania. Because of the two journalism mechanisms with different directions and underlying background mentioned in this research work and because of the analysis of Lithuania’s internet media content, this work could be useful for journalists and editors of the mass media implements, who spread the news about foreign events, especially those about military conflicts and other critical events.
