Abstract [eng] |
This master 's thesis analyzes the problems of terrorism, which are revealed in the Lithuanian public discourse. Because terrorism and the mass media are closely intertwined, as the mass media can broadcast the knowledge terrorists want to transmit through terrorist acts, this work seeks to reveal how in the context of mass media the knowledge of terrorism is constructed, what its features are revealed. First of all, the work aims to show how terrorism is perceived in the scientific literature of terrorism, what its definitions are. It then reviews the theoretical approaches used to study the phenomenon of terrorism in the sociological and criminological fields, and attempts to discover similarities between these theoretical approaches and the interpretations of this phenomenon provided by terrorist scholars. An attempt is made to elucidate the theoretical assumptions of the sociology of knowledge and social constructionism, as this work will analyze terrorism on the basis of this theoretical approach. It is also desired to find out what perception of terrorism prevails in the Lithuanian public discourse. The analysis of Lithuanian mass media - LRT, Delfi and LRytas publications - is performed. Its results show that most of the features of terrorism mentioned in the scientific definitions of terrorism are revealed in the publications of these media. Also, in the context of these publications, the organizational aspects of the execution of terrorist acts and the ideologies and personal data of the perpetrators of these acts are described. |
