Abstract [eng] Due to the increasing interest in Lithuanian literature in Italy and the stable popularity of Italian novels in Lithuania, it is very important to investigate and ensure the quality of these translations. The object of this thesis are Italian and Lithuanian compounds and their equivalents in the TL. The main goal of this research is to analyse 3 Italian and 3 Lithuanian novels and to define tendencies of translation procedures while translating compounds. To reach this goal, the following tasks were chosen: 1. To gather all compounds in the analysed novels, to examine their patterns and to define their tendencies of usage and translation. 2. To find out which translation procedures are used the most and how they render the semantics of the SL compounds. 3. To compare the translation of Italian and Lithuanian compounds and to define their similarities and differences. 4. To create a bilingual dictionary of compounds found in the chosen material. The research aims to answer these questions: which compounding patterns dominate in the selected novels? Which equivalents are being chosen while translating standard and non-standard compounds? Which translation procedures are the most common and what tendencies do they reveal? How did the translators manage to render the peculiarity of author’s style and cultural background? The methods applied were synchronic word-formation analysis, qualitative comparative linguistic analysis regarding the translation and qualitative linguistic analysis. The hypotheses for this research are the following: 1. A part of Italian and Lithuanian compounds will be replaced by other compounds in the TL. 2. The majority of the compound equivalents in both languages will be derived words. The research material consists of 225 unique Italian and of 279 unique Lithuanian compounds. This material was gathered from 3 Italian and 3 Lithuanian novels and their respective translations. The novels chosen for this thesis were Questa storia by A. Baricco, Il bar sotto il mare by S. Benni, Se un viaggiatore una notte d’inverno by I. Calvino, Trys sekundės dangaus by S. Parulskis, Žuvys ir drakonai by U. Radzevičiūtė and Žydų karalaitės dienoraštis by S. Šaltenis. The theoretical part of the thesis was dedicated to the concept of compounding and a brief presentation of classifications of compounds and translation procedures. The research part was dedicated to the analysis of compounding patterns found in the chosen novels and their equivalents in the TL and to the examination of translation procedures and their tendencies. The main conclusions are the following: 1. In the Italian novels V+N, P+N, sW+N nominal compounds and Adv+V, sW+Adj, sW+V adjectival compounds were predominant. The majority of Lithuanian nominal compounds belonged to the N+N, N+V, Adj+N patterns while the majority of adjectival compounds were of the Adj+N and Num+N type. The usage of Lithuanian compounds better reflects the grammatical standard than the usage of Italian compounds. 2. The most common translation procedure of the nominal compounds in both languages is synthetic change of the distribution of semantic components, whereas the adjectival compounds tend to be translated using the analytic change of the distribution of semantic components. 3. 13,5% of Italian nominal compounds and 8,5% of Lithuanian nominal compounds were translated using the TL compounds. The majority of Italian nominal compounds were translated using the derived nouns (35,3%), while the biggest part of Lithuanian nominal compounds was translated using the simple nouns (43,3%). 4. 2,6% of Italian adjectival compounds and 5,4% of Lithuanian adjectival compounds were translated using the TL compounds. The adjectival compounds of both languages tend to be translated using the combination of words (respectively 44,7% and 53,4 %). This paper might be useful for those whose interests are comparative linguistics, translation or word-formation.
