Abstract [eng] |
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the expression of an address in Polish and Lithuanian by Lithuanian Poles, to determine how young Lithuanian Poles address in Polish and Lithuanian languages in various daily life situations, to identify how language contacts affect the expression of address, and to see if expressions of address are transferred from one language to another. It was also necessary to determine whether Lithuanian Poles are using typical for dialect expressions of address. In this thesis a discourse completion test (DCT) was used to collect all the data, 100 completed tests were used for the analysis: 50 in Polish and 50 in Lithuanian. Pupils of Polish schools in Vilnius and students of Polish philology at Vilnius University participated in this study. The classification of the expression of address forms was created by classification system used by Čepaitienė (2007) as well as using the data of this thesis. The results of this thesis show that the distance politeness strategy in Polish and Lithuanian was used in very similar way, in Polish this strategy was used 498 times or 58.6 pct. and in Lithuanian 511 times or 60.1 pct. Contact politeness strategy in Polish was applied 229 times or 26.9 pct. And in Lithuanian 250 times or 29.4 pct. From these numbers it can be seen that the contact politeness strategy in both languages was applied in similar way. The use of the contact politeness strategy was mostly determined by age and by the conversation participants’ relationships status. The distance politeness strategy was most often used by respondents depending on the position held by the addressee, their age, and the degree of situation formality. This research showed certain features of expression of address in Polish and Lithuanian by young Lithuanian Poles. It also highlighted certain similarities and differences in the expression of address in these two languages. The obtained results show how the expressions of address are used in one social group; therefore, the conclusions cannot be applied to all Lithuanian Poles. The results of this research could be useful for researchers of the linguistic politeness as well as for people who study Polish or for those, who want to get know its culture better, also for Polish and Lithuanian language teachers at the Polish schools of Vilnius city and district. |
