Abstract [eng] |
Epilepsy is a quite common neurological disorder related not only with health problems but also with social and psychological difficulties. The greater screen time of children tends to be related with bigger behavioral and emotional problems as well. However, it is not clear whether excessive screen time use is associated with higher risk for emotional and behavioral difficulties for children with epilepsy. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the relation of screen time and internet use with their prosocial behavior and behavioral and emotional difficulties. The participants of this research are 40 children (22 girls and 18 boys), aged between 4 and 17, with age average – 10,7 (SD = 3,96). Data was collected using online survey answered by parents of children with epilepsy. The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ; Goodman, 1997), Children Screen Use and Everyday Environment Questionnaire and the Compulsive Internet Use Scale (CIUS; Meerkerk et al., 2009) were used for this research. The results showed that children with epilepsy obtained significantly higher behavioral and emotional difficulties score and lower prosocial behavior score than children from general population. Behavioral and emotional difficulties of children with epilepsy are not related with screen time but their behavioral and emotional difficulties are related with compulsive internet use. Regression analysis revealed that higher children’s behavioral and emotional difficulties score are predicted by higher scores of compulsive internet use. |
