The Link Between Early Traumatic Experiences, Family Relationships and Suicidality, Nida Kvedaraitė, Institute of Psychology, Master's Thesis, Vilnius, Vilnius University, 2021, 53p. This study aims to reveal the links between early traumatic experiences and family relationships and suicidality among rural and urban populations. 1841 people from various regions of Lithuania participated in the study. Distribution of study participants by place of residence: 485 participants from rural areas, aged 18 to 88 years (M = 46.53; SD = 16.26), while a sample of urban population consisted of 1307 participants, aged 18 to 92 years ( M = 42.61, SD = 16.96). Suicidality was assessed by using the Suicidal Behavior Questionnaire - Revised (SBQ - R) (Osman, Bagge, Guitierrez, Konick, Kooper & Barrios, 2001), Early Traumatic Experiences were assessed with Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire (ACE) (Felitti et al., 1998), Family Relationships were assessed by using the Parental Bonding Instrument (PBI) (Parker, Tupling & Brown, 1979). The survey also asks for gender, age, marital status, living situation, place of residence, education, employment status, average monthly income, financial situation, health assessment, religious beliefs, and sexual orientation. SPSS for Windows 23.0 software package was used for statistical analysis. The results of the study revealed that all types of early traumatic experiences (emotional violence, emotional neglect, physical violence, physical neglect, and sexual violence) are significantly related to incresed suicide risk in samples from rural and urban populations. A retrospective assessment of the parent-child relationship and suicide have links to the recalled parental care and authoritarianism of both parents, while excessive parental care was not significantly related to suicidality in rural and urban samples. Perceived parental bonding had links with early traumatic experiences – people who have experienced childhood violence remember their parents as less caring and more authoritarian. Suicide is predicted by the following types of traumatic experiences: emotional violence and emotional neglect. Perceived parental care of both parents makes it possible to predict lower trends in suicide risk, and the authoritarianism of both parents makes it possible to predict higher risk of suicide in the rural population. Lower suicidal tendencies in urban population sample can be predicted by maternal care. |
