Suicides in the capital city and rural regions: perspectives of people bereaved by suicide Globally, rural areas exhibit a higher vulnerability for suicidality. The tendency in Lithuania is similar – the numbers of suicides are several times higher in the rural regions compared to the cities. Despite that, it is difficult to determine the particularities of Lithuanian rural inhabitants’ suicides and their suicidality. Hence, it is crucial to further investigate the specific risk factors in this sociocultural context. The research aims to evaluate the similarities and the differences between suicides in the capital city of the country and its rural regions. Employing the research strategy of the psychological autopsy, this study is based on 113 interviews with people bereaved by suicide. The collected data is on 84 people who have died by suicide in the capital city and 29 in the rural regions, the majority of whom were men (75.2 %). The results have shown that people who died by suicide in Lithuanian rural regions had links to more severe problems of abusive alcohol consumption, less frequent use of health care and more incidents of domestic violence by harming others. Collected empirical data can be used to evaluate the specific factors of the commonly occurring rural suicides in Lithuania. |
