Abstract [eng] |
The title of this paper is “ "Make Japan Great Again": Manifestations of Imperialist Ideology in the Politics of Abe Shinzō”. The main goal of this work is to examine how the similarities to imperialist ideology can be seen in various aspects in the politics of the current prime minister of Japan, how that can affect national identity and international relations in the East Asia region (mainly with South Korea and China). Using content analysis of various news portals and applying other concepts relevant to the work (especially those of national identity and collective memory), it was concluded that certain policies, speeches, associations and other elements of Abe Shinzō’s activities can be linked to the imperialist ideology and its values; that includes the pursuit of constitutional amendments that cover the aspects of militarism, education, religion and the functions of the state, the inconsistent stance on Japan’s role during the war, growing historical revisionism, that might result in some changes of the national identity and a noticeable tension in international relations in the region. This paper could be useful for analyzing the politics of Abe Shinzō, Japanese national identity or collective memory (especially in the context of the imperial period and World War II), or studying Japan’s relations with its neighbours. |
