Protection of national minorities in the implementation of the international obligations of the Republic of Lithuania in 1918-1940: Doctoral dissertation. Object of research – protection of national minorities in interwar Lithuania. The analysis of – protection of national minorities includes two main aspects: 1) the review and evaluation of legal status of national minorities in interwar Lithuania; 2) the investigation of factual situation of main national minorities – Jews, Poles and Germans. With the use of common and reliable research methods of social sciences, on the base of the systemic analysis, the main aim of this doctoral dissertation – to investigate the legal status of national minorities in interwar Lithuania, particularly the international element of this status – is realized. The generalizing conclusions on the politics of interwar Lithuania’s authorities concerning the national minorities are given in this research. This politics can be described as twofold: in the first years of independency Lithuania assumed some international obligations concerning protection of rights of national minorities and therefore national minorities were given some special legal status. However in subsequent years, after the loss of Vilnius region and other lands of the former Great Duchy of Lithuania and after coming to power of right winged Lithuanian politicians, the rights of national minorities were abridged progressively. |
