Abstract [eng] |
One of the main suicide risk factors is a previous suicide attempt. Therefore, one of the main elements of suicide prevention should be ensuring effective care for people who end up in a mental health care facility after a suicide attempt. The aim of this study is to analyse the experience of people who end up in a mental health care facility after a suicide attempt. This study analyses part of the data of a larger study “The Suicide Problem in the Health Care System: Help Seeking and Efficacy” that is conducted by Vilnius University Psychology Institute Suicidology research center. Seven people participated in this study (5 females, 2 males, average age of 33,1 years), who ended up in a mental health care facility after a suicide attempt. In this qualitative study, interviews were conducted about the received care in a mental health facility after a suicide attempt, participants’ experience of it and about further care needs of the participants. The study showed that one of the main elements of care that were essential to the study participants’ experience, was the conduct of the staff and specialists of the mental health care facility and their relationship with them. Participants reported that it was important for them that the personnel are professional and attentive, and they give individualized care for the patients. Another important aspect that was highlighted was the possibility to interact with other people in the community. A few study participants noted that they find it hard speaking about their problems and accepting help. Study participants also stated that they found the safe and calm environment of the hospital helpful to their recovery. However, it was noted by the majority of participants that there were instances of personnel indifference, that some staff members gave unhelpful remarks that affected some participants negatively. Also, study participants noted that there were not enough specialists in the health care facilities they were in and that the psychological care was insufficient. While study participants reported that the prescribed medication was mostly helpful, there were instances of severe side effects. All study participants reported that the received care was life saving and helpful, after receiving care, participants stated that their outlook and behavior changed in a positive way. Study participants stated that they need further psychological care, but some are unable to receive it due to some barriers (health, financial problems, distance). Finally, study participants highlighted the importance of continued care that includes various life areas. |
